hello,i have been struck with the thought of posting some of robben's music as reccomended recordings on an audiophile site,
for me Supernatural sounds the best i've heard, followed by tiger walk & the blue line,
not having a really revealing system myself--i would like to ask memebers their opinions of the sound qualities of these discs/+ if any are available on vinyl too.
any backround info would also be greatly appreaciated too---as towards emphasis of recording tech details.
thankyou jsb.

Although it's not really a Robben record, Ricky Lee Jone's "Pop Pop" was a staple of audiophile reviewers for several years.

I have heard "Cut Me To The Bone" from the first Blue Line record at two different Stereophile shows in different folks booths. That and "Handfull of Blues" are the best sounding Blue Line releases. I have "The Inside Story" and "Talk to Your Daughter" on vinyl but neither of those is a real audiophile disk.

The acoustic stuff and "Brother" on "Supernatural" sound great through my 10-15 year old high end system.

Frankly, after the last Stereophile show, it was a relief to come home and listen to Ella. I think the high end has lost sight of realistic protrayals of musical performances. As Bruce Lee said in "Enter The Dragon", "We need emotional content".

I think this was mentioned somewhere else on this board awhile ago, but this recording was just re-released with 4 bonus tracks. In fact, one of the new tracks is a demo version of Imperial Strut. Very cool.

Unfortunately, all the rhetoric to the contrary, the audiophile community tends to overlook great musical performances in favor of something that shows off their systems. Beyond the earth shaking bass and tinkly highs that one hears in a Best Buy, they get off on things like spaciousness and transparency. I think the reason that Cut Me To The Bone gets used is that the drums are well recorded and natural sounding, the mix is clear and open, and whatever delays and reverbs were used on Robben's parts give a really three dimensional spaciousness across the entire soundstage. Rare for an electric recording to have this kind of natural ambience. Plus, for us, it's great playing!
Read an audiophile review in Stereophile or The Absolute Sound sometime and see how the reviewer waxes poetic about how precisely the guitar is placed in the three dimentional soundstage, and how you can hear all these nuances of wood and such. When we know that there's just an $80 Shure SM57 shoved up against the grilecoth. Laughing
