Capt'n,

Thanks for this post. I heard bits and pieces about this on "All things Considered" while running errands yesterday but didn't follow up.

An interesting vision of the future that was brought up by Lenny Beer (one of the most successful record promoters of all time and current publisher of "Hits" magazine) in the UCLA extension class I attended was record labels going back to square one. Lots of small labels specializing in a certain kind of artist and/or sound - history repeating itself. The small label idea works hand-in-hand with a return to real artist development and a mindset where a "double" or "triple" is considered a success and not just the "home runs." A label like "Favored Nations" comes to mind. This, of course, followed by the inevitable wave of consolidation.
