As I posted last summer my son is a jazz sax player who has taken up guitar as well. Last summer he earned his own dough and bought a Fender Strat and Fender amp.

Recently i was able to get him some more gear for next to nothing. i got a Gibson L6S guitar that is black with a serial # 81760513 and a Musicman 112 RD 65 watt amp with a serial # DN07430. The gear looks next to new and sounds nice when he plays it. The amp seems very loud and weighs a ton.

I know next to nothing about gear and wonder if anyone can tell me where i can find info about this equipment. I'm embarrassed to say how little i paid for this, but it was a pittance.

Is this quality equipment for a 15 yr old who is genuinely in love with learning to play and collecting gear ?

Sounds like someone put some decent gear together and then gave it away. The L6S was good enough for Pat Martino to use for a spell. And those little RD112 MusicMan amps are a real score. Chris Cain has been hauling his around for years. I played a friends a few years ago and they are really nice and versatile. He's a straight ahead jazz guy, I was doing blues through it and we even conjured up some nice hard rock tones from that hot little box.

The music man 112 RD, and in fact the entire line of music man amps, were "hybrid" with a solid state preamp stage and tube power section. Music Man at the time was associated with Leo Fender, tho I am not sure how engaged he was in the design of their amps (as opposed to their guitars...).

There's some disagreement, but overall these are regarded as pretty cool amps. I definitely like the 112 much better than some of the bigger units, which tended to be a bit on the harsh side.

Well, I do not know this amp, but I have modified L6S and just LOVE it. It has 2mm action on 24th fret and no buzz at all, just GREAT TONE. Congratulations great buy!!! L6S is becoming a collectors item this days and they are going up in price (about £700-£800 if in good condition)

I attended a symposium by Bill Lawrence a few weeks ago...Lawrence designed the L6S.

He talked at length about the L6S, Gibson, the industry in general, pickups, how great tone is produced with the PICK, then he demonstrated by playing for us...WOW! He's got some heavy-duty chops, was one of the top jazz players in Europe in the 60s-70s.

And all this time I thought he was just, "the pickup guy at Gibson."
