The latest issue of one of the Japanese guitar magazines has a short interview with Robben and Michael Landau after the shows at the Blue Note here in Tokyo. After the usual mutual admiration stuff, they each talk about the equipment they used for the shows. I won't try to translation the entire interview, but if anyone is interested in their gear for those shows, I'll translate that part.

I would also like to take this opportunity to ask a question to those of you in the know. I once met Michael Landau on the soundstage of A&M Reords where I was working at the time. It was such a negative experience for me that I refused to listen to his music after that. Since that was about 25 years ago (yes I do hold a grudge), I was thinking that it might be time to give him a break. So, can anyone here who has met him tell me what he's like these days? Is his ego somewhat smaller than the solar system now? And if so, what would anyone recommend as something to listen to from his repertoire?

Thanks.

Bill

Hi Bill,

I can't comment on the ego because I don't know Mike personally. From what I've heard from people close to him is that he is a very private person.

You can find Mikes CDs here. Some are harder to track down than others...BTW Mike's store on his site does not work???

(These are my affiliate links - please use if you can)

http://www.audiophileimports.com/cgi-bin/ai/cart.cgi/&command=listitems&pos=0&type=search?search=landau

He has 3 solo cds out:

Live 2000 - live at the Baked Potato
THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER
Tales of the Bulge

All are great CDs! The Live 2000 was the first one I bought and it just blows me away. Mike is one of those special players that has the full array of touch, tone and taste...but much different than Robben. There is a Hendrix vibe running through this CD! Mike's use of tone, effects and extreme dymanics are just mind boggling to me in a live setting. Get that CD.. it rocks!

Karizma - Document -
This is a fusion CD very good vinnie on drums!

Recorded live in Europe in April 2000. Awesome jams from some of the best in fusion. Vinnie is smoking on drums.

Lineup
David Garfield -keyboards
Michael Landau - guitar
Neil Stubenhaus- bass
Vinnie Colaiuta -on drums

Other Mike bands to check out are:
Burning Water and Raging Honkies

Mike also plays on this:
GREG MATHIESON, MICHAEL LANDAU, ABE LABORIEL, VINNIE COLAIUTA * LIVE AT THE BAKED POTATO 2000

2001 release. This amazing supergroup other wise known as the 'Dyno-Four,' have been blowing the roof off the Baked Potato in North Hollywood, CA for quite some time. Already destined for the Audiophile Imports top five cds of the year, this band recorded live June 9, 10 and July 15 2000, literally rocks the house, performing Greg Mathieson classics, entirely instrumental. This 2 cd set is a must have for every Audiophile customer, and all your friends! Greg Mathieson, keys; Michael Landau, guitar; Abe Laboriel, bass; and the maestro, Vinnie Colaiuta, on drums.

At the end of the day, their are very few artists that really have the ability to "touch the soul" with their playing and music. Certainly Robben is one, but Mike is right there as well!

Check him out!

Hi Bill,I can't comment on the ego because I don't know Mike personally too. From what I've seen in 1991 , when i 've seen him perform 1 time with Luke & gang in Baked potatoe and one time alone, this guy seems really introvertite, kind of eating his fingernails between two sets. But when he plays he hits the nail right on me, much more than Luke .
Yes as a Huge Hendrix fan , I am hooked on this guy .
Have you listened to his cover of 3rd Stone from the sun , in David Garfield tribute to J.PORCARO ? Amazing, Embarassed .
Now try to find another Greg Mathieson & Friends from 1990 too, it's a good one in studio.
I had tales of the bulge too, may be the remastered work do a better sound;

Too bad you had this Xperience.

Now do you know people havin'been to the shows , can you tell us more ,
i want to know ...............
Thanks Blob.

Oh yes i love his work with Joni Mitchell , very intuitive .

I met ML at the baked potato last year, I went up to him after the second set. To me he seemed like a very nice warm guy. I told him that I drove in from Vegas to see him, he could tell that I was drunk and he asked if I was driving back tonight. When I told him I had a motel room in walking distance he seemed genuinely relived. He is one of my favorite player and I have only been getting into him for a couple of years. Check out www.stolenfish.com

It is not Jazz or Fusion, just great music. All his other stuff is great to me "Live 2000" was what I got first and I think that could be a great starting point.

This is just my opinion, but I bought Live 2000 as my intro to Michael Landau, and I'm pretty disappointed with it. Yes, it's very Hendrixy, but it's very slow. When I played it, I grew increasingly inpatient waiting for it to pick up. Perhaps if I was there to view and hear it live, I would've felt differently. It's been here at my desk at work collecting dust for about a couple months, but this thread is making me interested in giving it another listen. Here goes, and I hope it sounds alot better a second time!

Thanks. I think that is kind of what I wanted to hear. When I met him, he had just taken over Luke's spot, and I guess it went to his head. In 8 years of working with very famous people at A&M, I never met anyone with an ego like his (with the possible exception of Madonna). So it's nice to know that he has come back down to earth.

And thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I guess I'll order a couple of CD's and see what I have been missing.

ML seems more mood oriented to me, I guess (slower). The stolen fish is more moody/psychedelic/rock, a little on the slower side. I like fast stuff, hard rock even, but I like "live 2000" it is intense.

I sure would like to hear some the Jing Chi with ML, I don't have much hope in ever hearing that one….. Sad
