Cool So picture this: For about the past two weeks life has been hectic both at home and at the office. Nothing life-threatening, but it's felt as if I was having to tread water furiously just to keep afloat. With deadlines and crises (not mine; my clients') this morning at work and having to run a bunch of errands at lunch, I left here at noon with a splitting headache. On a whim, right before getting on the freeway I pulled into our local used CD store to check out the "Blues" section.

Right in the front row in one of the racks: "The Blues Collection," Blu Rock'it Records' 1997 12-cut collection of Robben stuff that includes recordings going back to 1971 with the Charles Ford Band and Charlie Musselwhite; a 1991 cut from the Jimmy Withersppon era; some live tracks (among them a knockout "Help the Poor" from 1984 with Russell Ferrante, Roscoe Beck and Vinnie Colaiuta); and more. (Among the cool booklet stuff is a photo of Muddy Waters with the Charles Ford Band at the old Keystone Korner, c. 1972)

So ... for the rest of my lunch hour errands I popped the CD into the car player. Resut: Headache gone. Frown on face converted to big smile. Life is beautiful.

I hope that many of you already have this CD. There are some real revelations. E.g., 34 years of musical experience and his more recent vocal coaching have really boosted Robben's voice. And his decision to drop the saxophone after his stint with Musselwhite may have boosted his guitar chops, but was definately a loss in the reed department. His sax work on the Musselwhite "Blue Stu" is wonderful.

Guess I gotta' get back to work now. OK ... so how do I use this CD-player thingie here on my office computer ... OK, there we go ... front desk: hold my calls, please ...
