So of course I'm late with this one (just as I was late checking in for Elizabeth's birthday). Hope all of you engaged in suitably respectful observances yesterday, July 5, in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Rock & Roll.
So what it this "50th" stuff is primarily a marketing tool for a couple of beer brands? And we all know that Elvis didn't "invent" rock and roll. Maybe it was Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner in '51, with "Rocket 88," and maybe it was Wynonie Harris in '48 with "Good Rockin' Tonight." Or probably more accurately, when B.B. King says that "the Blues had a baby ... and they called it rock & roll," he's acknowledging a long and untraceable gestation period.
But regardless, July 5, 1954, really was the day that Sam Phillips got Scotty Moore to bring Elvis Presley into the studio at Sun Records in Memphis, and during a break Elvis started fooling around with Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's 1946 tune, "That's All Right (Mama)." And the rest, as they say, is HISTORY.
So happy 50th birthday, Rock & Roll. _________________ - BlueRunner
