Daved,
I'm curious as to the different degrees of overdrive Robben gets on various recordings.
Live he tends to used the same settings on the amp, leave the guitar wide open, rarely turn down the volume pedal, and just play with the channel switching and gain boost on the amp. And occasionally switch guitars from hotter to milder ones.
But on recordings there is a wide variation in the amount of overdrive, even in cases where it's obviously the same guitar, such as the Tele. Do you know if he uses the volume pedal at static settings, or does he re-set the amp for certain songs to get the amount of break up he is looking for. I think he's mentioned several times that he doesn't like turning the guitar down. So how does he do it? The range on recordings is much greater than live. I can't believe he handcuffs himself to playing at a certain strength of attack thoughout an entire song just to get a lighter or more dense overdrive.
