Over the weekend, the birthdays of Charlie Parker and Dinah Washington were celebrated.
One of the local radio stations had feature segments on both artists; and for the first time I got to listen in-depth to some of Ms. Washington's collective body of work.
Wow! She was most definitely HOT! What a voice! What soul!
Her stuff from the mid to late fifties was great, with some really cooking bands, super jazz and blues music. I guess she went 'pop' after 1960 or so.
She apparently was very independent-minding, picking her material without regard to musical style; she recorded the music that appealed to HER.
She checked out way to early (at 39.) She is a "must hear."
