Does anyone know what Robben thinks of Larry Carlton's playing. Someone told me they read an interview where Robben supposedly said that Larry Carlton 'stole ideas' from him as he was doing it first - I've no idea if he actually said this (or if it was meant lightheartedly) - seems hard to imagine someone of Robben's status having issues about another player in this way. |

Robben showed me a lick he admittedly "stole" from Buzzy Feiten. I don't know Robben well, but I don't believe he would have any resentment or jealousy towrd Larry or anyone else.
Didn't he just invite Larry to sit in at a show in Japan? I could have sworn I read that on this board somewhere.
I would guess that Robben is very secure in his talent, and doesn't think twice about what someone else is doing. If you've ever been to one of his clinics, you have a deep appreciation for what a great person Robben Ford is. _________________ Ham Fisted Bloozer |

That invite was extended to Larry in the Canary Islands when he came to the venue, almost directly from his flight, to watch Robben play. The only reason he didn't sit in was because he was worn out by the long travel from the States.
Larry & Robben are huge fans and admirers of each other and I would not be at all suprised if they both 'borrow' upon occassion. _________________ B C-ing U!

I have a book of Larry Carlton transcriptions where it clearly mentions Robben Ford as one of Larry's blues influences. So there you go - it's mutual.
Oh and by the way, I've decided to go and live in the Canary Islands ... It just might happen again, and next time Larry might not be so tired. _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. Is it just me, or does Larry Carlton sound much "dirtier" in concert than he does on studio recordings? I mean dirty in a GOOD way!
I can tell Larry a mile a way on studio cuts most of the time, but he sounds so much different in a live settting...
My brother "blindfold tested" me on the Carlton/Lukather in Tokyo CD, and I'm like, "...yeah, that's um, you know, it sounds a little like.."
When he told me it was Carlton, I'm like, "Doh!!! Curses!!! Foiled again!!!"
Thoughts?

If somebody has been to the North Sea jazzfestival in The Hague Holland back in 1997. They could have watch a Larry Carton gig and after that a Robben Ford gig( Tiger Walk)
Larry said during the gig that Robben Ford was coming next and that he is a true AMAZING bluesplayer. So now you all know !
Eventough they both got an identiccal technique and both uses dumble amps that means that they sounds the same. The only difference you notice is in the timing of their playing. Rbben plays more funkier and Larry more jazzier. If Robben is playing "out" he uses a lot of diminished-type licks , Larry uses single note chord-changes where he hint a chord-change while the tune is been played over one chord. But the big, big, big, big, big difference is that Larry plays with 80% hard work and 20% talent , Robben plays 80%talent and 20% hard work. I choose Robben, and he is more musician than just a guitarplayer.( His singing)
You have to compare Larry with Lee Ritenour and not with Robben Ford. Robben stands on top !!! That 's a big compliments for somebody who also likes John Scofield, Mike Stern, George Benson, Scott Henderson, Hiram Bullock, Frank Gambale , Dwight Sills , Dave Fiuczynski and more.
So go out there and listen to music ! That's my message to the Robben Ford fans !!!!!
C-you all later . Thanks ! |
