I've been raving about the Eminence Tonker speakers for awhile now. I finally got two 16ohm ones to put in my 2-12 cabinet. They are still breaking in but I'm in love. My old cab with the Celestion 65's that I did my old clips with is now for sale. These have the response, clarity, thickness with sting without being scooped. I don't know what kinds of Eminence Robben was trying with his combo. But these are the real thing.

Here is a clip of my distracted playing using a 335. It gets an almost Tele like attack. Robben, you can play your new guitars now. Smile With your hands there's no telling what these speakers could do.

Killer tone! What other Eminence speakers have you tried?

You are really selling your other cab?

Cap'n, of the other Eminence I've tried the Fuchs FAT1 which is very similar to the Delta Pro (I borrowed a Delta Pro which I've yet to put in something to try). It sounded like a nice EV but really needed to be cranked to come alive. I also tried a Governor at a recent GearPage tonefest. It was tonally similar to the Tonker but with a bit less dynamics and not as strong in the bottom end. The thing with the Tonker for me is how it responds. The C65's just feel mushy by comparison. Kind of like going from a regular amp to something really responsive.

So yeah, the other cab is on the shelf, just taking up space.

Unfortunately, I blew it on the arrangement of the clip and missed a bar of Am after the 4, which I didn't realize until I went to play the head over it. But I've had this idea for awhile to play this song over the calypso beat. And I finally got around to putting a line out on my Hammond to hook up the Pro3 leslie thing. This is also the first time I used the new drum overheads that Garth recommended to me (thanks guy, they're great). So I kind of rushed the guitar part out. Now I hear all kinds of ideas that I want to try to go back and do it all over again. But at least I suceeded in recording the new cabinet.

I just really think that Robben would love these speakers. They have the attributes that I usually think of as significant in Robben's tone. Dynamic, articulate, transparent, responsive to your hands. I bet if Daved called Eminence, they'd send him a couple.

I got a Tonker to go along with a Weber California 12, but because I'm having a Fuchs mod done, I haven't been able to hear it yet.
But it sounds great, Steve.

Actually, our contact at Eminence came to Robben's Hollywood show at the Key Club while he was in L.A. for the NAMM convention back around March. He told me at the time about their new Patriot/Redcoat speaker lines and encouraged me to check it out.

I recently did contact him about the Tonkers as I have been hearing very favorable reports from several different sources (including Alexander Dumble).

They've sent me some Tonker samples and also some test samples of another speaker they have developed, but not yet marketed, for Robben to test.

Having spoken with Robben today, we are hoping to finally get to that 'techday' we've been trying to schedule for pedal, speaker, pickup testing... sometime before we leave for Japan next week.

Cool Daved, it'd be really interesting to hear Robben's impression of the Tonkers. Hopefully they're broken in first, or they might be kind of dry and not have quite the quickness they should have. I don't know if the voicing would be optimum for the combo but maybe in that other 2-12 you show pictures of on your site. Or do you guys tear into the good rig when you're trying things?

I had a fellow with a Strat sit in on my rig last night at Moe's Alley. Neck pup sounded thick and the bridge wasn't shrill on OD, and the cleans were clear and warm. I hadn't tried single coils with these and was a bit worried they'd be too bright. Ought to be awesome with Robben's head and that fat Tele.

Well, Aeolian, I bought me a Tonker as I liked your soundclips and these speakers are not expensive and I must say: thanks for the hint, it's a great tone. Still I have no experience with a band surrounding as the next rehearsal will be on Oct 31. I'm very curious if I will like it then as much as I do now in my lonely room:-(
