It's not like me to get deep and meaningful (or maybe it's the time of year)... but I received some new guitar toys the other day which is something I tend to do this time of year.
This isn't usually enough to get me into a reflective mood, but the toys happened to arrive the day after some folks in our neighbourhood of the planet found themselves with an sudden over abundance of seawater.
And the same day I had a couple of starving musician types come to pick up a couple of old (but good) sofas that I'd advertised "free to a good home" on a local musician's bulletin board. I remember being in their position not too many years ago.
I suppose sometimes we don't realise just how lucky we are when the worst thing we have to worry about is guitar tone or which new guitar gadget to spend money on. I was aiming at getting myself a Keeley compressor for a birthday present in the new year, but I've found a better use for that money now.
Anyway, if you've had a rough year, here's hoping that 2005 sees a better year and better things for you .
If you've had a good year, here's hoping for more of the same (or better!) in 2005. And don't forget to share some of it around if you can; there's a lot of folks both home and abroad that could use a little bit.
So, hope your New Years' celebrations and gigs go well, and stay safe on the roads. Best wishes to everyone for the new year, for good things and good tone in 2005.

Here's to a great '05. My wish no. 1 for the year: Robben and gang playing a gig close to home here in SoCal. SOhO - Santa Barbara again? Majestic Ventura Theatre? The little theater at Ventura Community College? ('Tho Moe's could be cool, too. The year is starting off great, as I am recovering from a herniated disk I incurred around 11/22/04...I'm feelin' pretty good now, but was a hurting puppy between Thanksgiving and XMAS...
Looking forward to seeing Gregg Allman and Friends on 1/30/05, and possibly BB King on 1/16, if I can get tickets...
I've rattled my bass player's and guitar player's cages, and hopefully we'll start hacking some tunes pretty soon...
I want to work up "Indianola" and "Nothing to Nobody" and possibly "Freedom" but gotta be careful I don't overdose the guys on RF!!!
"Oh Gee" is definitely our first chore, it's a nice jazz blues "A" section with a "rhythm changes" "B" section tacked on...
I'm also working up an arrangement of Sammy Fain's "Secret Love" as inspired by the Danny Gatton version; leave it to Gatton to take a slow romantic ballad and turn it into a swinging, up-tempo picking fest...he sounds like a cross between Chet Atkins and Lenny Breau on steroids!!!
In addition to more "rhythm changes" work, I'd also like to study some of Coltrane's "Cycle of Descending Major Thirds" harmony, and see if I can apply some of it to our modest repetroire...
Well, that's about the extent of my immediate plans...I'm glad to be here!!!

I sympathize with you and the back problems. I have either two or three herniated discs. I've been turned down for surgery by 4 specialists so far. Glad you're feeling better. That's one reason I switched to a Fender Blues Jr. amp! Sounds like you hit the ground running. Best wishes to you and the rest of the RF board for a great 05.

That is a cool site! I had heard of that thing where they heat and shrink the disk. That looks promising. There is also a disk replacement that just started happening. It might be a winner after they get a chance to test it on somebody else!
In the meantime, all of us middle-aged guitar heroes that can't afford roadies just have to downsize! Hmmm, I wonder if there are any blues piccolo players?
