I want to tell you……….

I had my first "buckethead" experience Monday night. He is not a shredder, and he was a better player then I expected. He did remind me of Paul Gilbert, fast smooth lines, and very tall and lanky in stature. Very funky edge, and a rockin raw sound. He was playing a White Les Paul, through a "Rectifier" head into a simple 4 x 12" cabinet. I could not see his peddle board, but he was not a big peddle pusher.

This was a band called "Colonel Claypool's bucket of Bernie Brains". I have been a Les Claypool fan for many years, Primus and his other projects. I think Les is a brilliant guy, fantastic way with insightful words and a rhythm machine. It was very funky rock, jammy, like Ozric tentacles/Phish ( but much better players then Phish).

It was performance art, with very good players. They all move in charismatic, groovy weird ways, And they are into masks. I don't think Buckethead could see his fingers very well with that mask he wears. He moves like Michael Jackson at times, and also just rocks like a rock star. They did a funny shtick with a MJ/Frankenstein mask and Les with this monkey/planet of the apes mask. The opener was this little lady named Gabby La La, not sure how to explain Gabby La La.

One thing that separates the men from the boys to me, is an awesome sense of time, and a clear understanding of dynamics. I strive to have both. Time I have, and I have capitalized on this by using a metronome or drum machine in my practicing. I have a band where we listen to what each other is playing ( what a concept huh )…I use my volume a lot too, like a bluegrass player uses the distance to the mic as his or her volume control.

I think these guys could make music with a stick and a rock, I would pay $500 to get a video of this show.
