Hi Daved,
I'm curious (as I'm sure many others are) if you were able to have your tech day with Robben and if there were any things which piqued Robben's ears? There are a couple of threads on pickups, OD boxes, and such, going on. And enquiring minds are waiting with bated breath. It seems Robben pulled the Zendrive pedal out of the box for one of the brothers shows and got rave review from folks in attendance (and murdering the value of used Banzai pedals in the process ). How did he like it?
I'm interested if Robben got to try the EMI Tonkers and what his impressions were. Too bright? Too foward? Or, did the jump factor make him jump. The only reason I'd give up mine would be to go back to something that was easier to play though (more forgiving) which is not a necessity where Robben is concerned. In fact I brought them up as I thought that they fit into Robben's tailoring of his rig for expressiveness. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Obviously I'm not Daved, but here's what he said in another thread...
Quote: | Bill,
You will be hearing the BB #1 in the bridge position & the BB#2 in the neck position.
You will also be hearing Eminence Tonkers in the Dumble cab.
Robben is still testing them out, but he has been very favorable towards them so far.
Back home we also have a set of 'Redcoat' speakers not yet being marketed, which Eminence sent us, installed in his other Dumble cab that Robben likes. Their tone is different, but Robben & Alexander both liked them and see them as potentially useful. We will delve into them more when we get back. |

Correction here... (sorry Bill, my mistake)... I just checked my notes again and that's actually a #3 in the bridge. _________________ B C-ing U!

Thanks Daved. I guess he wanted a hotter bridge pickup. I'll be looking forward to hearing those pickups.

As Bill Morgan posted elsewhere, we are trying some things out. I will give a more thorough report of our techday activities & the resulting tryouts during our Japanese trip when I get back home next week. _________________ B C-ing U!

Tonkers? No more Celestion G-65's? Now that's news.... |
He's trying them out. But at the volumes Robben plays, over a week of touring, my concerns that he might not get an experience of a broken in pair doesn't come into play
Wish I could be there to hear it. Especially to hear Robben play something really dynamic like the MD blues through them. With that kind of responsive coupling to the air, driven by the Dumble, what those hands and those ears could produce. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I heard from friends down in the Osaka area where Robben played last week that this time around it is pretty much a Keep on Runnin'/Blue Moon show. So I don't think we'll get to hear MD Blues. Still, it will be interesting to hear the Burstbuckers and Tonkers together. When you think about it, this is quite a departure for Robben. It's gonna be fun!

I'm curious as to how the Tonkers throw in the Dumble cab, and if the efficiency gain over the Celestions means Robben has to turn the amp down noticably. I got harrased all last night for being too loud while I had the master down at 1 1/2, and it didn't sound out of balance on stage. My cab has some baffle trickery, that I'm trying to get a patent on, that makes the speaker sound more as if they're front loaded. Didn't dare touch the Tele until I broke a string on the 335 in the last set
Anyone know much about putting plexi shields in front of the amp? _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I don't know if it will help any, but check out the interview with Joe Bonamassa in ToneQuest mag. You can download it for free on their website.
