Hey Scott. I want to put a set of vintage correct pickups in one of my Strats (probably going to be Fralin Woodstocks) and I was curious if these kind of pickups sound good with high gain. I’m using a Maxon SD9. Thanks.
I'd avoid Fralin Woodstock pickups like the plague if you plan to use high gain. Those are the pick ups I used on Dog Party - they're good for clean blues but that's about it. We did a cover of Hound Dog" on that record, and for that song I used a high gain pedal - it could be the worst thing I've ever recorded. The tone was worse than my playing, if that's even possible.
If you're going for the vintage thing, I'd highly suggest Suhr V60LP pickups. They're extremely vintage sounding but not super bright like the Fralins. Those are the pickups I used on Tore Down House - they work fine with high gain pedals.

The Hound Dog solo cracks me up - there’s a bit where it sounds like the cable got unplugged and then you hear an ‘arrrghhh’ right after. Is that what actually happened?
