Hi Scott, curious if you’ve tried a UA Ox stomp with a Suhr Load? I’ve been using this combo for a couple months now and there’s some cool sounds in there.
I'm not a fan of the Ox - there are IR's out there, especially the ones made by York Audio, which are far superior. In fact, IR's made by any other company are pretty lame compared to York. With the Suhr Reactive Load and York IR's, you'll get the best tones possible without using real speakers. The IR player is also very important - I used to think they're all the same, like a CD player, but nothing could be further from the truth! If the IR player can't play the full 500ms of the IR, the bass from the IR will be lost. Hardware IR players are all crap, not only because most of them truncate the IR down to 30ms which sounds terrible, but because it takes the full processing power of a computer to do the job properly, so the only good IR players are computer plug-ins, like MixIR 2 or MixIR 3.
The downside of that is putting an IR player on every track, which takes up all the computer's processing power. There's a great workaround for that - put the IR player on a buss, and assign the input of your guitar tracks to that buss. By doing that, you only need one instance of the IR player in your project.
I think the original Ox box was let down by its reactive load, the Suhr is far superior in that regard. The actual cab modelling software is pretty legit though.
Specs on hardware IR loaders seem to have improved - the Boss IR-200 does do 500ms.
