Hey everyone, I'm completely new here so I have no idea how this works yet, But My name is Jordan and I play in the band Mindwalk Blvd:

Obviously I'm a big fan of Scott/Guthrie/Bumblefoot/Lane/Holdsworth/Tatum/ guys like that,

but I literally have no footing in music theory at all, I really want to find a system to translates directly to guitar playing, so if you guys could suggest some book/dvd choices, I'd seriously appreciate it!

Hope to hear back from some of you..

The Doug Doppler DVD "Diatonic THeory and Harmony" is a good start. You can find it on AMazon, or Guitar 411.


So, what do you want to know? We can start a dialogue.



One thing I'd recommend:

Learn the Major Scale, and how to Harmonize it.

Here's something that might help to get you started:

Code:
The MAJOR SCALE PATTERN

W = Whole Step = 2 Frets.
EX: A to B = Whole Step

H = 1/2 Step = 1 Fret
EX: A to A# = 1/2 Step

The Major Scale Pattern Is A Pattern Of Notes That Span 1 Octave.

The First Note Is Called The ROOT Note. This Names The Scale.
EX: G Is The ROOT Of The G Major Scale.

Between Each Note, There Is An Interval (Distance) Of A Whole Step (2 Frets), Or A 1/2 Step (1 Fret).

There Are 7 Different Notes In The Pattern.
The 8th. Note Is The OCTAVE Note.

The Pattern Of Notes Is Very Specific.
Here It Is: W W H W W W H
(STOP NOW AND COMMIT THIS PATTERN TO MEMORY!)
