Hey Scott,
I'm considering options for a custom guitar and noticed that in an earlier post you said you disliked the tone of a floyd rose bridge since it doesn't have a block. I may be wrong but I thought floyds had blocks or maybe you were referring to the quality of the blocks? If so, do you have any thoughts on the upgrade blocks for floyds (like those offered by floyd rose upgrades)? I'm wondering if the remaining difference in tone wouldn't be outweighed by the benefit of the tuning stability.
The Floyd Rose bridge has a block, but the strings don't go through it, which I'm sure is a major factor in the tone. It's just my personal taste, but I can't stand the sound of those bridges - I think they rob so much of the tone from the guitar. They sound OK for metal or when using a ton of gain, but for blues tones, or when you really want to hear the acoustic properties of the wood, a Floyd wouldn't be my first choice.
Actually any tremolo bridge hurts the tone of a guitar, but the Fender vintage or standard bridges don't do nearly as much damage as a Floyd, and there are ways to make the vintage (the one I use) stay in tune really well. (see INDEX)
