Thanks! The time it takes to compose a tune varies greatly - if I get lucky and hear everything I want, I can write a tune in a day. Other times I have to go through the process of elimination crap that we all hate, and then it can take a week. I like to play new music on the road for a few tours before recording it.
I make a recording of the composition sequence and give it to the guys, along with a bass chart. It's more of a blueprint, because we always come up with better ideas in rehearsal. There are parts that need to be played exactly to fit the melody, but there's always room to improvise.
We recorded live at Kingsize Soundlabs is LA, and then I did a lot of overdubbing and layering at home.
