Hi Scott!
once again I want to say how great it is to be able learn so much on your site! I have been following your advice one after another, and my playing and tone etc have got much better along the way. This is so generous of you!

Have you had time to play the modern satin by suhr?

I understand you prefer alder and single coils, and thats what I would have wanted too, but I recently got a great offer on a pre-owned modern satin, and now I couldnt be happier. The sound of african mahogany seems brighter and "different" in a way I can not explain, but the richness of the sound and the superior quality of the guitar goes so much ahead of my other strats (none of them are Suhr) I am amazed by all this beautiful detail there is suddenly in my tone. As it is HSH I wonder though, would it be worth it (or maybe just silly) to wire the humbuckers to use just single coils even in the 1 and/or 5 positions. And in overall I am curious of how you would describe those guitars.

thanks again for your music, Vibe Station is really great!

Thanks!

Sorry, I don't know that guitar but it sounds interesting.

To answer your question, it sounds OK to split a humbucker when using it with the middle pickup, but by itself the tone is thinner than a single coil. However it's kinda funky sounding - I used a split neck humbucker on Big Girl Blues, so if you wanna know what it sounds like, there ya go. An option would be to put the split for both pickups on a push-pull tone pot, but still make them automatically split in positions 2 & 4.

Hey that's a great idea, thank you Scott! I absolutely love that tone on Big Girl Blues. It is like velvet.
