Hey Scott
Do you ever develop improvising ideas specifically for a tune? Sometimes for one reason or another I can't play what I normally play over a tune and so for one solo section I have to develop ideas. I am wondering if this happens to you.

Yes, I practice a lot playing through the chord changes of my songs. When I hit on something I like, I learn it. That doesn't mean I'll play it every night, but if the right time comes, it'll become part of my vocabulary for that song.

I'm always looking for motifs to develop - it's easy for me to just play the right notes over the chords. I want to tell a story, so the more motific ideas I have for a set of changes, the better.
