Hey Scott.
I've been trying to follow your technique of setting my bridge pickups tone control to around 3-4 and neck pickup to around 8. I love the tone though at those settings I'm finding the output of the bridge pickup to be a bit too low in volume relative to the neck and middle...when both tone knobs are wide open the relative volume is okay, though since I'm not going to ever have both knobs on 10, I'm wondering if you suggest having the bridge pickup raised or something to better balance out the volume of all pickups?
FYI I use a custom shop 62 reissue strat. I had my tech rewire it recently so the bottom tone goes to the bridge and the top tone goes to the neck and middle (stock it came with no tone knob on the bridge at all). I don't ever use positions 2 and 4 so I actually have a 3 way switch installed rather than a 5 way.
My pickups are at different heights to make them all the same volume. Here are the measurements from the pole piece to the string.
Neck low E 9/32
Neck high E 7/32
Middle low E 8/32
Middle high E 6/32
Bridge low E 5/32
Bridge high E 3/32
The neck pickup will probably look low to you, but this height sounds fine. It's best to keep the neck and middle pickups low anyway because if they're high they can make the string warble from the magnetic pull.
