Hey Scott,
Thanks for all of your incredible music and insight you've give us. I've learned so much from you over the years. I have a blackface 2x10 vintage vibrolux. I've been finding it difficult to get a fat sparkly beautiful sound out of it to my liking for recording. I've also tried using IR's and the Suhr RL because I was wondering if maybe I just don't like 10's. Same kind of thing. I've found some newer production and way cheaper fender amps that sound fatter and better, but doesn't have as much depth.
Mainly using single coils and pedals.
On 4 or 5, cleans sound kind of thin even with light pedals and uninpsiring. I've tried cranking it up to 8 for a lead sound, but still just expecting more life from it. Hard to explain. Wondering your thoughts on this or blackface vintage amps in general if you haven't played a vibrolux. |

Sorry but I haven't had any experience with that amp, so I'm not the right guy to ask. It's possible that you don't like the speakers. I never had much luck with 10's myself. but I haven't tried that many, so again I'm not very experienced. I'd suggest plugging the amp into an 8 ohm 2x12 with Greenbacks or Vintage 30's and see if you like it better.
I didn't like the speaker that came with my HRD, so I put in a Heritage 65 and it made a huge difference. |

Sorry guys for stepping a bit roughly in this thread, but you Scott are mentioning either Greenbacks and Vintage 30 as good speakers.
Do not have any experience with the latter, so I am just wandering which difference you see between the two.
I have read somewhere (this blog?) you are using Vintage 30 today, but I am pretty sure to have read somewhere else you used to have a 4x12 cab equipped with Greebacks.
Any serious reasons / issues with GB for swapping?
Thanks

Vintage 30's have more low mids than Greenbacks, but they're not as creamy sounding in my opinion - they have some hair on the top end. Maybe better for rock n' roll. Also, Vintage 30's have thinner paper than Greenbacks - if you push them too hard, they make that weird "cone cry" sound which sounds like there's another note in the background (and not a good one). I like Greenbacks more, but I recorded Tore Down House with Vintage 30's and there are some good tones on that record. |

Thanks Scott!
I got your point and I completely agree with your thoughts on V30.
My plexi replica comes stock w a bass voicing, and I love it most of the times. Nevertheless sometimes it seems missing those sparkling highs which may be the icing on the cake during a funky rhythm part or volume swells.
Your opinion let me look ar V30s as good speakers for a B-option cab, to carry on when I'm engaged in certain bands.
For sure I'll give them a try.
Cheers,
