Haha, big fat tone with inears, it's not gonna happen.
I've done a few tour with inears and it's terrible. I did it because of my tinnitus but it didn't help a lot... But even worse than not being able to get a fat sound with it, inears are the most terrible because you loose every contact with the actual room you're playing in. The good side of inears is not having to depend on a monitor mixer that doesn't care for the guitar player unless the guitarplayer pays his salary. I'm a sideman and most of my 'contractors' like rockguitar but they don't like the guitar to rock out, so they are happy if i bring along small gear.
If i ever get a signature amp i don't want the amp to go to 11 but as low as -1. So i can always say: no i'm one less loud!
I can totally hear you about a low stage volume as a sideman. I understand small amps and pedals for overdrive(like a deluxe and a few od pedals)
I just don't get the fascination that some people have with solid state or modeling rigs like a Roland cube or a line 6 amp. They just never sound as good to me as a small more traditional rig. And then some people say they do but they never point to an example.
Again, when it is an archtop or acoustic instrument I have heard tiny solid state amps sound good because they are amplifying an already rich sounding acoustic tone.
Sorry dizzy, i misunderstood, you specifically meant the fascination with SS and modeling.
I guess everybody understands the fascination for getting legendary amptone, as i call it, on 'tape' in the private studio. Ever since i started recording guitar at home -4 tracks on cassette haha- that was the ultimate dream and it still is. But since most people can't blaze a halfstack in their appartments, getting the tones out of line stuff seems the very logical direction to go.
However, taking it one step further by getting truly fascinated for Line6 or Roland Cube 'magic', goes beyond my imagination as well. Luckily i do not know any such people.

I'm 62 and I lug around a Marshall head, 4x12, pedalboard suitcase, and HRD wet amp. My back hurts but I'm dedicated to tone. Don't be a gizmo pussy or you'll end up working at Apple. Man up you guys!
Happy Holidays!
Happy hollidays to you too, you ultimate rock beast!
