Hi Mike!
Welcome.
You are not too far.... We could get together and play sometime. I am near Philly. Email me if you ever in the area.

Man, what was it like taking lessons with Krantz? That must have been a great experience.

The first time i walked in, Wayne just had me sit and play for a while. He comped while i fumbled through some solo ideas. I was actually thrown way off just sitting there listening to how amazing he could make a simple one-chord/one-voicing groove sound.
Over the years, we went over a broad range of things, from theory-type things to rhythmic things, and many points in-between.
I have a couple of notebooks of stuff from those days, and they are treasure troves of great exercises (that i never practiced as much as i should have) that i still open up and work out of from time to time.
One really cool thing was that at one point he started tapeing the lessons, and my last lesson with him is on a cassette somewhere here. It's a great idea, and i only wish i had all my lessons on tape.
Wayne was patient, and always cool to be around, and would basically teach anything you asked, or if you wanted, he would just listen to you play, and then make suggestions of things he could help you work on.
These days, i know he has this thing on his website where you can sign-up, and pay with a credit card, and you get lessons right through the computer. I've never done it, so i'm not sure exactly how it works, or what he covers in them.
As an aside, i think the first track on "Greenwhich Mean" is one of the greatest guitar performances i've ever heard. Anyone reading this who has never heard that album owes it to themself to check it out.

I had a couple of lessons with Wayne a few years back.
He did this rhythmic thing where you solo over a metronome
and every 4 or 8 bars stop on 1 of that bar.He would solo very
rhythmically free and land on 1 to help centre his time when
his drummer would do something rhythmically wierd.
I have trouble with that sort of thing and it helped. |
