A friend and I went into LA to see Michael Landau at the Baked Potato Saturday night. He played with his trio Friday and Saturday, I could only make the Saturday shows. We got in early to get the party started, got great seats front row center. The house pre-show music was Jeff Beck "Blow by blow", Ohm, and Jane's addiction, great start!

I got some pictures and I posted some at the bottom, I got one of the set list but it did not come out. He played a lot from "live 2000" and "Budge" He also played "worried Life Blues". I know that song from Robben Ford, he recorded that on Mystic mile ( which I love ). Landau also did a new song, he played it in the middle of the first set and the last song of the second set. I went up and asked him if this was a new song he said yes. Then I think I asked if he would record it, and he said they recorded tonight. So I hope and pray I can relive this show about 200,000 more times.

Landau has a smooth way about him, his music flows like a river. Some parts are slow and swirling, some are faster, turbulent, always intense. He has a very thick sound, like Robin Trower, and David Gilmour. He uses lots of interesting chord changes, not exactly chord melody but chordel passages, that are very melodic. Great blues tone, great PROGRESSIVE blues player.

I was introduced to many great players at my year in GIT (1987-1988). Robben Ford, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale are just a few that I always pay attention to. I have seen Steve Morse 17 times live. Landau has moved to the top of my list as great inspirational players. He sure seems like a warm, kind hearted dude, even to a drunk trying to get a picture. Scott Henderson was in the audience along with Steve Lukather, who ended up sitting on the floor in front of Landau, totally into it.
