Just read this:
As said by Ritchie Blackmore
"One of the secrets that they will deny to this day—’cause they told me they would—was that they could not come up with the sound that I wanted. I wanted this Vox sound which was very distorted and very cutting, but seemed to have a bass resonance. And they just couldn’t get that. So in the end they said, “What we’re going to do is get one of our combo amps and we’ll take out the innards and put in the Vox innards. So you’ll actually be playing a Vox, but it’ll say Marshall. That was the big secret of the day."
What a bizarre interview. Maybe his memory isn't what it used to be because he never even mentioned the AIWA TP-1011 tape recorder which he played through during most of Deep Purple and Rainbow. I heard from many sources that he didn't only use it for echo, but to provide more gain for the amp, like using a boost pedal.
Anyway, still one of my favorite guitarists and his tone was unbelievable.
Here in Brazil, Glenn Hughes once gave an interview to a magazine and said that he didn't user Marshalls at all: they were turned off, but on stage; on their back were the amps he really used, I don't remind exactly which, maybe Ampegs.
Anyway, never heard about Ritchie amps as well; thought he was a Superlead user. Btw, the Majors are awesome
