Hey Scott
1. Your albums have a nice flow to them.
When you are writing for an album do you make a conscious effort to make the album cohesive? Or does it just happen that way? For example do you say "I need another fast tune because all the tunes are slow so far."
2. On your solo sections on recording, when it is not a vamp, do you predetermine how many times you are going to solo over the form or is it cue'd
Yes, I make a conscious effort to make all the tunes different in feel. Tempo is difficult, because I like medium tempos the most, but I always try to include faster and slower tunes.
In the studio, I usually do pre-determine how many choruses my solo will be if it's a long form. If it's a short form, then I don't think about it, I just solo until I run out of ideas - which usually doesn't take all that long.
