Hi, Scott.
So I have replaced the speaker in my HRD with a celestion g12h65. I plugged the amp to the computer and run a 30Hz tone for a day like you suggested in some previous posts. Right now when I play clean there is no problem, but when I add some distortion to the tone the amp sounds like someone put a blanket on it. It's hard to descripe. Is this normal for a new speaker? Perhaps I didn't set the amp loud enough when breaking it in with the tone generator? Or perhaps the electrician that was working on the amp screwed something up? (he'd also replaced the tubes and did some minor mods).
No, that's not normal. When you say you added some distortion, is that with a pedal? Because the distortion channels on that amp suck, even bad enough for someone to think the amp is broken when using them. If you're using a pedal and the amp sounds bad, I can only suggest you take it to a repair shop - it could be a tube problem or something that your electrician screwed up when he modded the amp. The speaker not being broken in well enough wouldn't cause those kind of problems.
