I've learned a lot more from Mike than he's learned from me - he mixed two of my records and working with him in the studio was like going to school. He's as good an engineer as he is a player and that's saying a lot! He's been really unselfish about sharing his knowledge of tone, and people like him are why I decided to do this message board - to pay back all the free advice that I've received from my musician friends during my career. Check out the INDEX for more of my posts about Mike - he's one badass musician.

Scott, do you know how Mike mixes drums? I love the fat woody snare sound he gets, especially on his live albums recorded at the Baked Potato. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the guys he plays with, but there seems to be a consistency in all his stuff.

Sorry, you're asking the wrong guy. I've watched him work, as well as other great engineers like our drummer Alan Hertz, and also Scott Kinsey. These guys have mixing experience I just don't have - I can get close, but the subtile details these guys pay attention to... wow, sometimes I can't even hear them, especially when it comes to compression, gating, etc. I trust myself giving advice on recording guitar, but your drum questions need to go to a real engineer.
