I usually avoid this kind of shit, but this guy really pissed me off. He wrote a one star review of the HBC record, simply because he didn't like the fact that we were playing covers. Here's his review in quotations, and my responses.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear!, August 4, 2013
By stuart b brady

"I'm afraid this falls into the category of so much promise.....unfulfilled.
You can't deny the musicianship here...all three players are at the top of their game, but I was left feeling utterly let down by this recording. The basic problem?......lack of ideas. I want more from these guys than largely a collection of poor cover versions of other tunes...what were these guys thinking?"

This guy claims in a few of his responses to my comments that he's well informed about music. I'm wondering why he didn't recognize the obvious fact that the album was covers. The song titles are clearly listed on the back cover. And if he knew they were covers and hates cover albums, why buy it in the first place?

"If musicians of this caliber want to just jam....go to a rehearsal room and jam....don't try to make a cd that says nothing and ultimately disappoints completely."

There are no jams on this record, proving again that this poor guy knows nothing about music. All the songs are arrangements, not jams.

"I expected more of these guys and so should you. Great music doesn't just happen when you join great musicians together, there needs to be a game plan and clearly these guys didn't have one. Save your money and don't buy this, maybe they'll get the message!"

Our game plan was quite obvious - to pay tribute to some of our favorite legends of jazz by doing our versions of their music.

You can read the thread here. My point is basically that I don't mind a bad review, but there should be a reason for it. To buy a cover record only to give it a bad review for being a cover record, then tell people not to buy it.... and this guy calls himself a fan.

There's another one star review on there from a guy who simply hates my playing. I'm sorry he feels that way, but least his review has a reason to exist.

I can't even imagine what this guy would say about Art Tatum Album , One of the most Innovator,Greatest and Respected Pianist In The jazz history , just because he's mostly (or always?) playing song from other composers.
He's Like coming to Chinese restaurants and expected to eat Tacos .
He Doesn't like Cover/Tribute Album but he buy tribute Album and starting complaining about it

I thought I recognized that name. He's a member of the Tribal Tech Addicts group on Facebook. Also, he's friends with Kinsey (as well as one of your HBC cohorts). Is there a connection? Start the conspiracy theories...LOL!

Anyway, I think you should write an original tune dedicated to Stu called "Douche on Amazon." That will satisfy his need for original music.

Well then I guess he IS a fan... hard to believe. I would never in my wildest dreams give anyone I respect a one star review, especially for such a stupid reason as this. I can put up with bad reviews, in fact they're comedy for me, but this isn't a review at all - he's using us as scapegoats to tell the world that he doesn't like covers. What a fucking moron. Loved that quote "coming to a Chinese restaurant and expecting to eat Tacos." Exactly.

Stuart, if you happen to be reading this, I'd be more than happy to take this post down if you apologize, not for disliking the music or playing on the album - that's an opinion you're entitled to, but for overstepping your rights as a music reviewer. The composers of the songs on HBC gave us their permission to play them - we don't need yours. Jazz musicians have a right to interpret music they didn't compose, and whether you like that or not, you don't have the right as a reviewer to tell people not to enjoy it. You can't diss our record simply for being what it is, no more than I can buy an opera record and give it a bad review because I don't care much for opera.

If you don't have the common sense to understand why you pissed me off, read the other one star review of HBC and understand that it doesn't bother me one bit. Unlike your dribble, his is an actual review.

Yes, this was indeed a bizarre review as jazz musicians have always interpreted other songs.
