Hey Scott
If you played with a totally clean amp with drive pedals would you still do a wet/dry rig?
It sounds like one of the main reasons you do it is to enhance the touch sensitivity from the dry amp.
A totally clean amp with pedals won't get you much of a sound, because the amp is doing none of the work. The power tubes are a huge part of the sound, and if they're not pushed hard enough, you'll have thin and brittle sounding tone. It's the combination of mild amp distortion and the pedal which makes it work.
That being said, a clean amp with pedals isn't going to get you the kind of sound which would be very touch sensitive anyway, so a wet/dry setup probably wouldn't make as much of a difference, but effects in the loop would still color your tone and load down the head. Don't believe what you hear about transparent FX and mixers - they're not.
John Suhr modded the clean channel of my Deluxe to make it more crunchy. Before he did that, I was using an SD-9 with the volume and gain turned all the way up and there still wasn't enough gain. It didn't sound very good either because the SD-9 sounds weird when the gain is turned up that much.
I'm looking forward to hearing the Bella - maybe it'll replace the Deluxe for small gigs.
