Hi Scott, I was wondering if you had any favorite Jean-Luc Ponty albums and what you would recommend listening to for a beginner. Also what do you think of his composing style? Have you ever played with any other violinists during your career and if so how do you like it?
I like Jean Luc's playing but the only album I know is the one I played on. I'm sure I had recordings of his stuff many years ago because I learned the music by ear. I liked some of his compositions, but others were too "smooth jazz" for my taste. He wrote a lot of songs with "two-chord vamps" for the solo sections, and Willis used to make fun of that by playing his tape cassettes on fast forward - the sound would go eeeee ooooo eeeee ooooo - pretty funny! But seriously, some of his writing was really good. He's the only electric violinist I've ever worked with, but I've heard enough of them to know that Jean Luc stands out as the best, and his tone is amazing.
