I've always used a click track with composed material. We didn't use one with Tribal Tech when we were jamming in the studio because we didn't want it to influence the rhythmic direction of the music.
With my trio records, we record directly into Digital Performer, which is the DAW I use. A track template is made so it's the same for every song, and before recording, we set the tempo for the song. We send a click to the drummer - he's the only one who hears it. This process gives me bar lines when overdubbing and producing the music, which is very handy if I need to copy and paste.
Most drummers don't mind playing to a click - they're used to it.
