It looks like JoJo Mayer has figured it out:

You could totally do something like this! Just play a blues form over an electronica beat, and make sure to play a "BEEOOOOW" sound every 30 seconds followed by a heavily reverbed sample of a guy saying something psuedo-intellectual like, "This. Is. Not. Reality." |

The one and only real necessity of this kind of music is groove, guess what this performance lacks... |

This performance lacks Scott Kinsey`s *erotic-vocoder-vocals*....With Kinsey-vocoder.... the girls would go bare-naked !!! |

Why do we assume there's no way chicks will come to instrumental gigs.. Al Di Meola has plenty of album covers of him with beautiful women.. they love speed picked harmonic minor runs.. bahahha.. actually I heard a record of of Al, Stanley and Ponty all acoustic stuff.. he sounds great on it, I dug it. |

This sounds like musical outtakes from '80s European softcore porn films. |

Yeah, that's the Rite of Strings album. I used to listen to it a lot my freshman year of college.
I have a funny story about girls and harmonic minor runs. In 2008 I went to a Return To Forever reunion concert in Chicago. As you might have guessed, most of the audience consisted of middle-aged dudes. However, in the row in front of me, there were these two women dressed in the tightest dresses and sporting the fakest tans I've ever seen. Seriously, they were like, Donald Trump orange.
Anyway, I initially thought that these two ladies had been dragged to the concert by their significant others (much like how I dragged my then girlfriend and future wife), but they were there on their own accord. Then the band took the stage and each musician was introduced. As soon as the announcer called out Al's name, the two women went berserk, and it all became clear: these women were Al Di Meola groupies!
During the intermission, the women disappeared, but as the second set began, I saw that they had somehow managed to score a couple front row seats. Al sure was having a good time. He kept making his seductive album cover faces at them while doing his little shoulder rolling dance he does every time he gets excited. His musky New Jersey sexiness must have been overwhelming, as both women were escorted to the backstage at the end of the show to meet whatever sensual fate awaited them.
Moral of the story? You CAN play palm muted sextuplets followed by a descending diminished arpeggio and still get laid.
Now as far as JoJo Mayer is concerned, he does have some cool stuff that he's done with Nerve. I didn't like it at all at first, but then the other day I learned that my birthday falls within the Millennial generation range, which mean I'm allowed to like electronic dance music without looking like I'm trying too hard to be hip. No wait! "Hip" isn't the right word. Is "on fleek" the term I'm looking for? I'd better check Urban Dictionary... |
