I should preface this by saying that this is certainly nothing against your playing on Reality Check, which I like quite a bit.

That said, this guitar-less tune is my favorite on the album.

What are your thoughts on it?

On another note, this made me realize that I really love the Willis-written TT tunes - Self Defense, No No No, Nite Club, etc.

I'm not much of a musician, but it seems that I can always identify a Willis tune, yet I can't articulate what it is about them. It seems he's really good at taking a theme and messing with it, so that the tune goes places but retains some kind of shape all along. That's my non-technical take on it.

I love Willis's writing, but to be honest Speak is a little too happy for my taste. It's still a great composition, but he has plenty of other tunes I like more. I think he was a better composer than me in the Tribal Tech days - not to brag but I wouldn't say that now. One of the things I love the most about his writing is (like Wayne Shorter), his harmonies can be very angular and surprising (in a good way), and more often than not, I like them at first listen. There's a lot of complex music out there which is well written, but takes time to grow on me. When I hear complex writing and immediately like it, I know the composer is doing it right.
