Hi Scott,
When you are working on your tone, do you set up the entire rig and play at gig volume? I find that when I dial in my rig at a lower volume it sounds totally different onstage. This is frustrating.
Do you have to dial things in loud, or are you ok with dialing tones soft, then turning up on the gig?
As always, thanks a million!
There's a point when you turn down the amp and the power tubes aren't working hard enough - at that point the tone changes for the worse. When I'm dialing in tones at home, I usually don't need to turn up quite as loud as the gig, but it needs to be loud enough for the power tubes to do their job - that's still pretty loud, especially in my small room. If you live in a place where you can't turn up, it's worth renting a rehearsal space for a few hours to dial in your tone so it's more like the gig.

That's exactly what i do when i get a new amp. I also take along a little PA to playback play along music to get some 'in the band' like feeling/reference.
