So I was watching a YouTube thing where Zakk was talking about amps and cabinets, tone, etc... and one of the things I heard him say was something the the effect of listening and demoing amps and cabs at high volume is hard because after 15 mins or so the ears are shot and you lose the ability to hear those subtle differences but he said the real test is with smaller studio speakers and he said THATS where you can really hear the difference.

Soooooo... he prefers 300 watt EV cabs so he can hear the tight lows and crispy highs and all things in between. Scott, I'm curious about your thoughts on speakers like EV's of which he's talking about. Obviously your tone is much different than Zakks and I would consider your tone more of a vintage/smooth tone and his is much more aggressive and "in your face" so to speak. Are those EV's more "hi-if" sounding to your ears?

Thanks bro...
Chris

PS. A quick web search says Zakk uses EVM-12L speakers and now even has his own "Black Label" EV speaker...

I used to use EV12L's back in the Tribal Tech days - because Willis and Kirk played so fucking loud that I needed to play at deafening volume to hear myself. I'm lucky I didn't get tinnitus or loose my hearing completely.

EV's are very midrangy speakers - they wouldn't work for what I'm doing now but they'll definitely punch through anything and allow you to be heard! They're also super heavy - a 4x12 with EV's would feel like it's nailed to the floor.

I agree that AB tests are better when you mic the amps and listen in the studio at medium volume. If the differences are subtile, I record and switch between tracks - I hear better when I'm not playing.
