Hey Scott,
Do you have a favorite compressor plugin you like to use on cleaner or light breakup tones? I've been using the waves ones, but I find they have way too much color and I usually end up overdoing it and sucking out the life by accident.
I don't know much about compressors, but before we mixed Vibe Station, Alan Hertz insisted that I buy the Waves API 2500. He loves it and he's a great engineer so I take his word for it. He only used it on the bass, and on the overall drums bus - he told me he uses it very sparingly because he wants to keep most of the natural dynamic range. However I could see why he needed it for some of the bass parts - with a direct bass, some notes pop out too much and some are lost. After he put a little compression on the bass we didn't have to ride it as much.
