Hi Scott, if you have a spare 20 minutes (I know you don't), and haven't seen a Benjamin Zander's TED talk on classical music, maybe you'd like to check this out.
Anyway, at around 1:10 he talks about how people mature as musicians and have less "impulse" in their playing, and I wonder if that is also true for rock, jazz and other genres apart from classical music?
I've never heard the word impulse used in this context, but it sounds like he's talking about playing with an overall relaxed feel, which definitely translates to every kind of music. He's playing very effortlessly, which is something we all strive for - easier said than done, but that's why we practice so hard.
