Hi Scott,
Yesterday I heard about that letter on the radio.
It was written by Robert Crump (comics writer) to Mats Gustafsson (sax player).
I don't think I ever listened to Gustafsson's playing, so I can't tell if it's as bad as it is described, but I found the letter hilarious.

Great letter - I wrote very similar one to a friend who made a terrible "free jazz" record. Not to personally insult him, but to tell him that I think he's capable of much better things.
There are some people who do that kind of music well, but when it starts to sound like little kids wanking around on instruments, that's where I draw the line.
There's a hilarious Stephen Colbert show where he makes fun of John Zorn's "genius award". I couldn't find it on the Internet so maybe Zorn got pissed and had it removed, but it's right on the money. |

Thanks for your answer, Scott, but....
You had a gig last night, and you're here at 7:30am! Rock'n'roll star way of life isn't what it used to be
Or maybe your night just ended now?
(I don't know if you have to share the same room with your french mates, but just in the case, be nice and try not to type too noisily, so the little ones can sleep) |

The Colbert segment is hilarious.
I listen to this when I can't sleep. When Sonny Sharrock comes in with some soulful blues at the 3:47 mark, I drift off into a blissful dream...

Thanasis, can you transcribe this? |

Haha hipfreejazz I don't think I will ever be able to. How can you sleep with that? I envy you. I was just about to, tried and I am fully alert now haha Need to put Song Holy Hall on repeat to overcome the shock! Just kidding, but it scared me a bit.
Wow that letter is a bit harsh, haven't heard this album but if I got a letter like this (which is not unlikely) I'd take up knitting. |

Thanasis, I was kidding about that tune. No way you can sleep through that sonic shrapnel!
Song Holy Hall is one of my favorite TT tunes. Love the zen feel and brilliant tone, note choice, and phrasing demonstrated by Scott. |

hipfreejazz yeah man one of my favorites too. I also like how the delay on the guitar track is designed to fit the dynamics of different sections (dry wet mix and dare I say EQ too?) Don't know... But it sounds like it is done real time, the oldschool way.
Kinsey 's layering is great too and that bass line so simple but with megatons of character.
The guitar is possessed by demons. Beware when transcribing it, especially if there are cast iron parts on your bridge. Learned it the hard way. Can't say more but I've warned ya'!
Sorry Kevin I got carried away and I'm way off your topic...
Scott I hope you are enjoying the tour and that you don't get to see a toast Marshall ever again. |
