Hey Scott,
In the past couple of years, we have lost a lot of the great musicians of our time. Allan Holdsworth, Larry Coryell, Paco De Lucia, to name a few. John Abercrombie is unfortunately, also no longer with us. He was a wonderful jazz musician and always played lyrically and very melodic.
On the podcast, i enjoyed listening to your Joe Pass stories.
John was also of that generation. Did you happen to meet him over the years? _________________ Plan like you are going to live forever, live like you are going to die tomorrow.
Unfortunately I never got to meet him, but I saw him play a duet concert with Ralph Towner when I was a student at GIT in the 80's. They played really well together, both very adept at conversational improvising. John had a lot of cool sounds too - he was a modern jazz guitarist. In those days only the rockers had pedals and most of the jazz players used a hollow-body straight into the amp, so it was nice to see a jazz guitarist with a pedalboard and effects, and using them in such a creative and musical way.
