Hi Scott!

Can you please recommend a low wattage amp that can get me close to your tone?
Did you have a chance to try Marshall Studio 20w amps, like SV20 and ST20?

Thanks

To be honest, I'm not the right guy to ask. I've had no luck at all with low wattage amps, but I haven't tried many of them. I had a Suhr Badger, but that's a class A amp and I like class A/B amps much more. If I was playing low volume gigs, I'd have more of a reason to try them, but we play in rooms where I can use my 100 watt amp with no problem, and I use IR's for recording and can turn my amp up as loud as I want.

I tried a brown face deluxe—like the suhr hombre—and it got a really marshall -like tone.
I’ll bet through a closed back cab it could sound cool.

I tried the Hombre with a 4x12 - if the guitar tone is all the way up it sounds pretty good, but that rock 'n roll tone doesn't work for me. I'm looking for a less fizzy, rounder tone that still has a voice-like quality. You can get that with a 100 watt Marshall, if you lower the tone on the guitar and keep the bass knob on the amp very low. Amps without a bass knob totally woof out if the tone knob of the guitar is turned down, and that's what I experienced with the Hombre. That being said, it's the perfect amp for someone who wants to sound like ZZ Top at low volume.
