Got the chance to hear the new Jake E Lee, Michael Schenker, and Leslie West albums.
All of them are on Shrapnel, and like all new Shrapnel records these days, they are cover albums. All of them also feature Tim Bogert on bass and Ansley Dunbar on drums.
Jake's album ("Retraced", out on 4-26) is very "bland" to me, as every tune uses the same dry guitar sound, and the song choices don't seem too inspired. It is nice to know that Jake is playing again though.
The Schenker album has Trower's singer, Davey Psttison, and although they do some more well known covers ("Badge", "While My Guitar GEntly Weeps", "Layla", etc), the results are still pretty generic to my ears.
Actually, i haven't listened to the Leslie West record yet, but i'm sure when i do, it's going to be more of the same.
It seems like Mike Varney has caught the "MTV disease" of using the same formula over and over on every project, and as a result, making everything sound like the same generic sludge. At least on these new records, the guitar players actually played the rhythm parts too instead of just coming in for solos to blow their loads on pre-recorded tracks, so that's a step in the right direction.
Damn, doesn't anyone want to try and do anything original anymore?
Oh wait, i also heard a record by a guy named Oz Noy, and although i didn't really care for it, at least he was trying to do something different.

Davey Pattison is an awesome vocalist.
I still need to track down a copy of the most recent CD he did with Trower.
Definitely pick that one up- some beautifullly soulfull guitar playing from Trower, and some really cool songs too.
