Hi, Scott. Let me start by saying I've been a fan of your playing since about the time Nomad came out. I was wondering if there were any standards you'd recommend someone just getting into playing jazz learn. I'm a die hard '80s shredder at heart, but now that I'm older with more harmonic knowledge, I'd like to get somewhat proficient at jazz/fusion.
Interestingly enough, I have your REH Jazz Fusion Improvisation video on VHS. I bought it in '90 or '91, but all that stuff flew right over my head then. I went to watch it again the other night, but damn if all three VCRs I found packed away in closets failed. Luckily, I found it on DVD on Amazon and ordered it.
I also want to thank you for the advice of using the other end of the pick. I still use it both ways; it's like an additional tone control. Hope all is well with you.
Most of my students start out on easy standards like Blue Bossa, Tune Up, Maiden Voyage, Softly as a Morning Sunrise, Red Clay - there are lots more I'm not remembering right now... The video is really easy to understand and will give you the tools you need to play over those kind of chord progressions. Glad you like the pick technique - I learned it from Mike Landau.
