Hi Scott.
It's about time I'm struggling with sound guys and bandmates when giggin' in small venues, where I happen to get complains about guitar loudness, even though many of those times I do not hear myself good.
That is even more frequent when my amp happen to lie right at my foots (=narrow room on the stage), but directed straight in the face of the first row spectators, whom are getting the s.c. 'beam effect'.
I've read a lot of threads about this topic, and a few days ago i discovered some manufaturers (e.g. Weber) sell a 'beam blocker' aimed ad bloking the harsh highs from the cone center targetting the audience.
But one of the most effective solutions out there seems to be a plexiglass in front of the amp, slightly inclined so that it reflects the amp sound bottom up, easying the player himself, as well as the band, to listen guitar sound in a better way, not mentioning it protects the guys in front of amp from beam effect.
Do you have any experience with that?

I've never tried it myself, but I can only imagine the harsh frequencies which would result from sound bouncing off plexiglass - ouch.

I put my cabinet right next to the drums, tilt it about 45 degrees away from the band so it's not too loud for them, and also isn't aiming at the soundman, and I stand as far away from it as I can. This has been working for me - the guys usually put a little guitar in their monitors, and the soundman doesn't hear guitar too loud off the stage.

As far as the people in the front row to my right, well I hope they love guitar.
