My personal experience with string gauges is, 9's sound OK with humbuckings but are a bit thin with single coils, so I use 10's. I was using 11's for awhile tuned to Eb, which is great for blues, but for high gain, they sound too woofy for me - the string looses too much of it's voice. 8's require a condenser mic like a Neumann 87 - very thin sounding with a 57.
What about jazzboxes? I myself find funny that people use 15 gauge or so strings in them. When the tone is amplified with humbuckers and proper eq much less is enough.
