Hi Scott,
Despite a lack of apparent mental illness, I have spent the past decade of my life playing in instrumental bands. People have always responded positively at gigs, but it's no secret that it can be a tough market.
I would like to ask, what do you find to be the key to engaging an audience of non-musicians with this format? Musical olympics? Cheap drinks? People accidentally showing up at the wrong bar? Is there a good answer to this question?
My mind instantly comes up with "well, you need to play good music. simple as that." ...but, I wonder if you have more insight into this. Also, I am referring to the gamut pretty much: from instrumental rock to fusion, even straight-ahead jazz.
That's actually a very good question, and I have a very good answer - Regardless of how serious we take our art, (and that's OK when we're at home) we're still in the entertainment business. The music on it's own can only entertain the people who like it and are fans of it, but that's never the whole audience. There are always people who were dragged there by their friends, or walk-ins who came because it was the only thing to do in town that night. I've played many festivals where I'm sure only 10% of the audience had ever heard of me.
That's why we need to learn how to talk to the audience, make them laugh and feel comfortable, and above all, have a great time on stage - because that vibe is extremely contagious. If you're up there with a mad face thinking you suck, that vibe is also extremely contagious, so don't be surprised if you get no love from the audience.
I think you're totally right about the attitude factor ...sometimes I forget that I'm not playing to a room full of guitar players. I also feel like the gig should be the one time you can kinda let go a bit, ironically, as the work is (should be) already done.
I really appreciate your thoughts on this; the next time I am hating myself during a solo/gig, I am going to remember this.
Now, if I could get you to talk about Allan Holdsworth a bit... (just kidding!)
