Recent youtube postings show Kurt playing with the Peter Beets Trio -
What would you say is most responsible for his near lack of pick attack in this case ?

| It's a combination of compression from the amp, or pedal if he's using one, and you can clearly see that he's picking very soft, making the hammer-ons and pull-offs about the same volume as the picked notes. Great playing from Kurt as always. |

He's an amazing talent. His tone has gone stratospheric, I think.
Even the fastest lines have the softest attack. |

| I read somewhere that he was using a compressor of some sort to hide the attack. I'm not sure if he's using it here or not |

| Why does his playing not grab me? He's obviously adept. It all sounds very level to me. Too level and too even. Cant fault his technique. Where are the balls? Where is the abandon? |

I totally get where you are coming from..I've heard the name but this was the first time I actually checked him out. There are ton of guys playing in like organ trio settings out of NYC that sound so much like that nowadays. My understanding is he is the original.. it's much like steve khan's playing - soloing really has no dynamics or anything.. I am sure with more listening you'll dig it but I hear what you mean. |

Yes, that's better. Still not someone I would go out of my way to listen to.
I think straight ahead jazzers should have a consultant when they want to use overdrive. It's like an afterthought. |

| I love Joe Henderson and transcribing his solos was a must when I was a student. One of the best sax players ever in my opinion. |
